Jennifer Phillips - Barnum Senior Center
Jennifer Phillips began partner dancing in 1997 after some friends invited her to a weekly country western venue. After numerous invitations, she decided to go “just to get them to quit nagging me!” The lesson she first attended was triple-step, she stayed until midnight, and the rest is history.
To date, Jennifer has instructed all types of ballroom, latin, nightclub, country/western, and swing dancing. Her favorites are West Coast Swing (because of its many opportunities for individual expression, versatility, and musical interpretation) and Nightclub 2-Step (because of its smooth and elegant style). She has studied both American and International style ballroom dancing, and has recently begun to teach Argentine Tango. She loves to teach the unique “flavor” of each dance and to help the students understand how the dance should reflect the feeling of the music. Jennifer teaches only “leadable” steps rather than choreographed patterns not leadable in a social situation. She highly stresses the importance of the leader not being forceful, but using just enough to get the job done; likewise she teaches the followers to respond to the leader’s cues rather than “following” a pre-set pattern. Thus, she emphasizes the vital importance of true leading and following, going into great detail about the “how” and “why” of each movement.
Currently, Jennifer works full-time as a Recreation Coordinator at Barnum Senior Center in Denver. She teaches a total of 6 group dance classes per week in addition to exercise classes and other special events. New students for group lessons are always welcome – please call 303-937-4655 for seasonal schedule information. Because she and her husband are in a band called “Caleb The Spy” (named after her 6-year-old son Caleb), she has no spare time for private lessons.
